Most
times when I walk through the lobby, I catch myself critiquing – the furniture
is old, there is trash in the corner, or the coffee pots are empty. But then I
see the HUG!
It
can be the hug of a parent and child when picking up after school. It can be a
hug of two old friends re-connecting. It can be a hug of two best friends at
the end of an exercise class, wishing each other a great Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-16424773200751817912019-10-17T11:46:00.001-04:002019-10-17T11:46:42.096-04:00Talking About Bosses
I’ve joked that I have this deep inner desire to be liked. I
don’t want to be the “A**Hole Boss”, but I understand that not everyone
agrees with me, supports every decision of mine or, and this cuts a little
deep, likes me. I am also self-aware enough to understand that around the
water cooler, in an office, out having a couple of beers or a plate of nachos,
staff like to talk about their bossesCameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-23145856353471580832019-06-17T09:40:00.001-04:002019-06-17T09:40:19.107-04:00Y Family
Several years ago, I sat with a bunch of young couples in
their 30’s who all worked for the Y during their high school and college years.
They laughed and I cringed as they reflected on all their hi-jinx and games. A
few of them met at the Y and are now married. It seems we are some kind of
dating service!
Eventually the conversation turned to gratitude. Several of them
shared how Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-44934660023149596252019-05-30T07:42:00.001-04:002019-05-30T07:42:16.590-04:00That's Good, That's Bad
There used to be this skit on the iconic TV Show HEE HAW. It
was called “That’s Good, That’s Bad.” The skit would go something like this.
“I went on a plane ride today.” “That’s Good.”
“No That’s Bad. The plane had mechanical issues and started
to crash.” “Oh, That’s Bad.”
“No, That’s Good. There was a parachute for me.” “That’s
Good”
“No That’s Bad. The parachute didn’t open.” “Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-78411988605221487872019-05-14T09:05:00.001-04:002019-05-14T09:05:24.704-04:00WHAT MY PEEPS ARE TEACHING ME ABOUT LEADERSHIP

That line always makes me laugh and makes the young

Actually, I like “Hanging” with the young folks. Can I
use the term “Hanging?” Does that make me sound old?

Recently,
I was talking with an old friend about our Y careers and we described it as a

It’s
a love story written with weekend text messages from staff, sharing something

Several years ago, I circled up all the Executives and had
them list their best staff. I asked them, “If you graded all of your staff on a
scale of 1-10, who would you give a 9 or a 10?”
Out of 300 staff, we had about 15% that we would give a 9 or
a 10. If you research, that is fairly standard. Statistically, 15% of your team
are the high performers and 15% of your team should probably be Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-14830827052225526352017-02-13T09:47:00.000-05:002017-02-13T09:47:23.364-05:00GREAT LOVE SONGS
Three signs that I am getting old. First, a few weeks back I
saw someone messing with my neighbor’s car while he was gone so I called the
police. It turned out to be his friend playing a joke on him. My daughter
Ryanne just laughed and said “Old Man!” Second, Saturday mornings are spent
with a cup of coffee and watching my bird feeders and yelling at the squirrels.
And third, when I drive I Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-91280075318977061032017-01-12T08:44:00.001-05:002017-01-12T08:44:11.828-05:00Mr. Poole
Mr. Poole died this week. For the past 30-years he’s told me
to call him Bill, but he will forever be Mr. Poole.
Between the ages of 14 and 20, the Poole house was my home
away from home. I probably spent the night there at least 30 times a year. I am
thankful he never charged me and the entire crew for eating and drinking him
out of house and home!
One weekend, he confronted our group Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-78120473617614560812016-12-14T07:40:00.001-05:002016-12-14T07:40:28.782-05:00The Yah-Yah Club
A few years back I took our Y
Executive team on a bench marking trip to visit a vendor who has been
recognized multiple times for their work place environment.
One of the funny things that we learned about
their culture is they have this principle rule around the office called “No
Yah-Yah.” It doesn’t sound like the Yah-Yah from the Sisterhood but more
nasaly. (Sounds like ant) Say Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-90440089727211287022016-11-17T09:36:00.002-05:002016-11-17T09:36:24.039-05:00GRACE and TRUTH
I spent the day with a wonderful elementary school principal
who leads the most challenging school in our community. Filled with kids, most
whose home life is lacking. And that is describing it politely. Most of these
kids live in an environment that we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy. Her
stories haunted me last night, wondering what I would do if I were the
principal.
I bounced back and Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-91003853156445788102016-10-30T19:26:00.000-04:002016-10-30T19:26:45.868-04:00VERBAL CLICK BAIT - Part 1

It is funny how God puts people in our lives just at the right time. I was having coffee recently with a friend of mine who is Jewish. We were discussing of course our anxiety with the cultural problems our society is facing and the challenges around creating open and honest dialogue.
During our talk, my friend said, “Let me tell you a Midrash.”
“A Midrash,” I replied? “Isn’t that Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-88325654968350228552016-09-22T07:39:00.001-04:002016-09-22T07:41:53.986-04:00Then God Shows Up

Dear Mom and Dad,
As I've gotten older you've always been there to
offer encouragement, advice and good wishes. It has helped mold me into the
athlete and student I am today. This time, I want to turn the tables and do the
same for you, especially since this is my senior year, and likely to be my last
time playing organized sports.
There have been times before, during or after

I
like competition. If anyone is about keeping score it’s me.
But
keeping score in the workplace is dangerous. As a supervisor or boss we have
to. But it is especially disheartening when we keep score of our peers. We all
know how people keep score – they count our hours working, they keep score of
how they perceive we deal with quality, and they even count the good and bad in
our budget. TheCameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-47916224643582607292016-07-20T21:30:00.001-04:002016-07-20T21:49:32.719-04:00Y GIANT
Ironically, I sat around a table of friends this past week
and prayed for a few of the people in my life that have impacted my Y career.
Little did I know that soon one of those men, Bob Rule, would pass.
Bob Rule was a giant of a man. And that is not just
hyperbole. He impacted thousands in his lengthy YMCA career. His loss is not
just a loss for the High Point Y, but for the entire YMCA Cameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376474177325148572.post-24034585594338957682016-07-07T08:24:00.001-04:002016-07-07T08:24:05.011-04:00Story Tellers
This week in the Wall Street Journal, there was an article
about story telling. The article outlined the importance of how couples that
are able to share life stories with each other form a deeper bond. The gist of
the article is people who know how to tell stories have the ability to connect
at a deeper level.
I believe this is true as we try and share stories within
our Y families. Here areCameron Corderhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12554885733080565820noreply@blogger.com0
